[Coolle is apparently a spelling of an English name from 18th and earlier centuries.]

[Captain John Marshall, was commissioned March 4, 1776, as captain in General Miles' regiment, serving with that organization two months, nineteen days, and later was commissioned captain in Colonel Walter Stewart's Thirteenth Pennsylvania Regulars. He fought in the battle of Brandywine, where he was wounded. He was retired in December, 1778, and was given a pension May 8, 1818.]

[Stewart, Walter. 1756-1796.

Walter Stewart in January 1776 was appointed captain of Company F, 3d Pennsylvania Battalion. Stewart distinguished himself and became an aide to General Horatio Gates in 1776. Stewart was made commander of the 13th Pennsylvania Regiment and fought at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. Stewart was wounded at Monmouth and when he returned to duty he was given command of a new regiment. His 13th Pennsylvania Regiment had been combined with the 2d Pennsylvania. Stewart, as senior officer, was given the command. In 1780, conditions in the American army caused the Pennsylvania troops to mutiny. The mutiny was put down and a reorganization of the Pennsylvania troops followed. Stewart was given command of a battalion of Pennsylvania troops and assigned to Anthony Wayne's command. His brigade fought with Wayne's command throughout the Yorktown campaign..]

John Cool: 3rd, vol xx, pg 117. Cumberland County. Supply Rates -- 1779. Atrim Township. Cool, John, s., 50 acres, no horses, cattle, negroes

[In the early days of the War for Independence, the Continental Congress authorized the granting of 50 acres of land to each prIvate and to each non-commissioned officer. Some states also promised to grant land to veterans of the Revolutionary War (See The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy, by Val D. Greenwood, Baltimore: The Genealogical Publishing Company, pp. 330-331). ]

[Revolutionary War Bounty Land is a grant of land from a government to reward citizens for military service. Pennsylvania . . .[and eight other states] selected reserves in their western domains. By placing veterans on the frontier, the states could rely upon a military force to protect the settlements from Indians. These states also granted exemptions from taxation for a few years to life.]

Actually, it's William M. Cool, 1 male over 16. It's clearly M dot cool, not M apostrophe Cool. Several of his neighbors have Scotch Irish names, the rest look English. My guess is that this is a Scotch Irish Cool. Could be the same William McCool in Chester County above. Chester County is a well-spring of the Scotch Irish in PA and there are McCools there today.

2 males over 16, 5 males under 16, 5 free white females, no slaves. Many of his neighbors have names that look Dutch. This could be a Dutch Cool. In 1790 and 1800, Ulster County NY bordered NE PA. I don't know about the history of the settlement of the county but with a name like Ulster, it probably had it's share of Scotch Irish.

One male 0-10, one male 10-16, three males 16-26, one male 45 or older;

two females 10-16, two females 16-26, one female 45 or older, no slaves.

This count is compatible with the 1790 William Cool in Ulster County. Probably the same family.

NB: Ancestry.com index says this record is in "Unknown Townships," but you can find it under "New Platz Township."
